ANIMAL CONTROL

The City of Spearfish Animal Control Division is maintained by the Police Department with one officer. Duties consist of enforcing city animal ordinances and parking regulations. Up until the year 2001 the ACO only performed these tasks. Now the ACO is a certified Law Enforcement Officer with all the powers of arrest, just like one of the officers from the Patrol Division. Along with traditional duties the ACO assists the Patrol Division whenever they are need of additional man power. 

Lost or Missing Pets

If you have a lost or missing pet, please call Animal Control as soon as possible at 642-1300 to report a description of your pet and for assistance in locating your pet. If the Animal Control Officer is not available to answer your call, please give the information to the dispatcher and or phone operator so they may relay the description to the Animal Control Officer.

Licensing Your Pet

Remember to license your dog/cat yearly at the Spearfish Police Department if you reside within the city limits of Spearfish. City pet tags are required per ordinance and can be obtained by producing proof of rabies vaccination by a licensed veterinarian to the Police Administration Office between the hours of 8 am - 4 PM Monday - Friday. Cost is $5.00 if spayed or neutered, $10.00 if not spayed or neutered.

If licensing your pet is not a requirement where you reside, please have some form of identification on your pet at all times by either:

1. A personal identification tag with your name and your pet's name, address and phone number
   
   
2. A current rabies tag with the name & telephone number of the veterinarian clinic and number assigned to the vaccine.
   
   
3. A micro-chip implanted by a veterinarian or animal shelter.

ANIMAL SHELTER

The Spearfish Animal Shelter, located at 324 Industrial Drive (click for Google Map), is operated by the Western Hills Humane Society.  The shelter is open Tuesday – Friday from 10:00AM – 5:00PM and Saturday from 10:00AM – 5:00PM.

Ordinances To Remember

Section 5-1 Running at large prohibited

No owner of any animal shall permit such animal to run at large in the city and no animal shall be off the premises of its owner unless restrained upon a leash and accompanied by its owner or a member of the owner's immediate family.
City Fines:  1st offense: $66.00   2nd offense: $91.00 3rd or more $136.00

Section 5-34 Nuisances

Any dog or cat within the city which habitually barks or howls or chases or annoys animals, vehicles or persons or which damages or destroys property is hereby declared a nuisance. the chief of police of other police officer may proceed to abate such nuisance.
City Fines: $101.00

Section 5-51 City Pet Tag Required

It shall be unlawful for any person within the city to keep, maintain or have in his custody or under his control any dog or cat without first having obtained a license from the city.
City Fines:  $66.00

Section 5-11 Liability for fines, cost etc.

All fees, fines or cost levied or incurred by the city in the enforcement of this chapter shall be paid by the owner of the animal.
