The Solid Waste Department for the City of Spearfish includes the Solid Waste Collection Unit as well as the Restricted – Use Site (Rubble Site).

The collection unit has 3 full time employees who cover over 3500 residential and commercial accounts Monday through Saturday morning. Additional staff includes part time employee who fills in between collection and the Restricted – Use Site.

The Restricted – Use Site utilizes 2 regular part time employees for daily operations and as well as two additional part time employees to keep up with various duties at the Site. The site recycles on average 1100 tires, 200 tons of metal, and 250 automotive batteries per year. The site also composts all grass and leaves coming into the facility and utilizes it for reclamation for the bury area.

The hours of The Restricted-Use Site are as follows:

April 15th –Oct 15th open from 9:00am -6:00pm seven (7) days a week.
October 16th to April 14th open from 9:00am-5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, closed on Sunday and Monday.
The Site is also closed on these holidays; New Years Day, MLK Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Native American Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday, and Christmas Day

The City of Spearfish currently holds a clean-up in the spring and fall, usually in May and September, in which residential use is free at the facility. Watch for date in the City’s newsletter as well as the Black Hills Pioneer.
