How will I be contacted if my property is in violation?

Property maintenance cases are initiated either through a concerned citizen or neighbor who reports a concern or files a complaint; or they are personally observed by the property maintenance official. All citizen complaints are investigated to determine if an actual violation exists.

If a violation is discovered, you should expect to be contacted by the Property Maintenance Official. The initial contact may occur through one of four methods

  • The property maintenance official may contact you in person. The individual will carry an official identification issued by the city of Spearfish
  • You may receive a notice (door hanger) attached to your front door or other visible location on the property, you could receive one of the following:
  • You may receive a notice in the mail
  • You may receive a telephone call from the official
